How to spot fake merchandise

Here are a few tips on how to spot a fake item:

Check the price
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. For example, a designer handbag at 20% of retail value should set your alarm bells ringing.

Watch out for dodgy descriptions
If an item has a poorly written description of the item, the details are different to the photos or the seller isn't replying to your enquiries then think twice about buying from them.

Make sure you can view your potential purchase first

If a seller refuses to let you examine your potential purchase and insists on only posting the item, please be cautious.

Found a fake? Report it!
If you find an ad that you think is fake, help us and other Freeads Fans by reporting it to us. Once you've reported it we'll open up and investigation and take any appropriate action. You don't have to do anything else!

Freeads is a great community and the vast majority of our users safely buy and sell every day without problem. Unfortunately sometimes things don't go as smoothly so here's some tips to avoid it:

Be alert to fakes

If you are not sure whether the description corresponds to the item or if the items appears to be fake, ask the seller for more information and/or report the item to us. We will investigate together.

Please pay attention especially to:

  1. Luxury goods such as branded designer handbags
  2. Electronics like iphones
  3. Art
  4. Anything where the description doesn't match up with or is not clear in with the photo
  5. Pedigree puppies being rehomed at an unusually low price
