A pet is a lifetime commitment

Never buy a pet on impulse.
Buying a dog, puppy, cat, kitten or any other animal is a long-term commitment that can last 10-20 years or more. Research the breed, temperament, health needs, exercise requirements and ongoing costs before making a decision. Careful research helps you avoid pet scams, irresponsible breeders and illegal sellers.
To make an informed and responsible choice, we strongly recommend reading the official pet buying advice and safety guides from the Pet Advertising Advisory Group (PAAG). These guides cover how to buy a puppy safely, what to check before buying a kitten, how to spot pet fraud, understanding animal welfare laws, and ensuring the pet you choose is healthy and legally bred.
If you’re unsure about any part of the process — from choosing the right breed to checking microchips, vaccinations, breeder licences or legal requirements — seek trusted guidance before proceeding. Responsible pet ownership starts with responsible research.

Check Before You Buy a Pet
✔ Consider adopting from a rescue centre first
Before buying a pet, look at animal charities and rescue centres. Thousands of healthy, well-cared-for dogs, cats, rabbits and other pets are available for adoption across the UK and need loving homes.
✔ Never pay before visiting the pet in its home
Avoid pet scams by never sending money or paying a deposit before seeing the pet in its current home. Genuine sellers will allow you to visit and meet the animal in person.
✔ Always see puppies and kittens with their mum
If you are buying a puppy or kitten, make sure you see them with their mother. Puppies and kittens must be at least 8 weeks old before leaving their mum.
✔ Visit the pet and check its health history
Always meet the pet before buying and ask about vaccinations, microchipping, worming, flea treatment and medical history. Be cautious of irresponsible or unlicensed breeders.
✔ Understand the cost and commitment of owning a pet
Pet ownership is a long-term responsibility. Consider the ongoing costs of food, vet care, insurance, training and grooming, as well as the need for daily exercise and companionship.
✔ Report illegal breeds and avoid imported pets
Some adverts may involve banned dog breeds or illegally imported animals. Smuggled pets can carry serious diseases that risk both animal and human health.
✔ Check if the animal is exotic, dangerous or protected
Certain wild, exotic or dangerous animals require a UK licence and specialist care. Always make sure the animal is legal to own and suitable for your home and lifestyle before buying.
